What are the Chinese advertising options?

Short answer: to reach Chinese audiences you cannot use Google or Meta, which are blocked in China. You advertise on Baidu for search, WeChat and Weibo for social, Douyin (China’s TikTok) for video, and RED (Xiaohongshu) for shopping. For Chinese tourists and residents in the UAE, these platforms plus Chinese-language content are how you reach them.

China needs its own media plan. The platform mix, language, account verification and advertising rules differ from the UAE. Start by deciding whether you need customers inside mainland China, Chinese residents in the UAE or travellers planning a visit. Those are three different audiences.

Main advertising platforms in China

PlatformUseful forWhat to prepare
BaiduSearch demand and research-led purchasesMandarin keywords, verified account and relevant landing pages
WeChatContent, communities, mini programs and customer relationshipsOfficial account plan, useful content and response process
DouyinShort video, live content and product discoveryNative video, fast testing and clear product proof
RED (Xiaohongshu)Reviews, lifestyle discovery and considerationCreator-style content, search-led captions and credible detail
WeiboPublic conversation, launches and broad awarenessTimely content and active community management

Do not choose a platform because it has a large audience. Choose it because your buyer uses it for the stage you need to influence.

Baidu can capture people already searching for a product, supplier or destination. Research keywords in Mandarin rather than translating an English Google Ads list. Check the live results, because one phrase may carry a different commercial meaning or level of competition.

Account and industry requirements vary. Confirm the documents, landing-page rules and restricted categories before planning a launch date. A local partner may be needed for verification or media buying, depending on the advertiser and category.

Localisation before media buying

A Mandarin landing page is only the start. Review the offer, currency, payment expectations, customer support hours, delivery, privacy notice and proof. Test it on the devices and networks your customers use. If the sales team cannot answer Mandarin enquiries, decide how leads will be handled before buying traffic.

For Chinese residents or visitors in the UAE, the campaign can combine Chinese-language content with location targeting and local proof. Link to a page that explains the UAE offer clearly rather than sending everyone to a generic corporate homepage.

How to test the market

  1. Pick one audience, one offer and one primary platform.
  2. Complete account and compliance checks before producing a large creative set.
  3. Build native Mandarin copy with a human reviewer.
  4. Track enquiries, qualified leads, sales and customer value.
  5. Review search terms, placements and lead quality weekly during the test.

Clicks and followers are not enough. The first test should tell you whether the audience responds, the sales process works and the economics justify a larger campaign.
